Quick movie reviews for Pandorum, The Surrogates, Bleach movies 2 and 3, and Eagle Eye.

Die Hard 4/Surrogates.
First of all, am I the only one that noticed this about these movie posters? Two totally different movies (but not by much) and he’s looking in the exact same direction with damn near the exact same facial expression? Was that his call or the studio’s? Nobody else caught that shit but me? And you wanna know what’s even more fucked up? Peep the movie posters/dvd covers for The Sixth Sense, 16 Blocks, Striking Distance, and Die Hard’s 1 and 3. Anyone else notice a pattern here? Sheesh…

Did a 2 for 1 special on Pandorum and Surrogates a couple weeks back. Went on a date to Premier Cinemas 14 inside Fashion Square Mall and it was a bit nippy outside. When the flicks were over, it was straight motherfucking cold outside! Glad I bought my hoodie cuz for some reason these theater owners don’t know how to turn that damn a/c off even when the temp outside is lower than inside. I got there a bit early cuz I was hungry and I wanted to hit up the comic shop cuz I needed a couple issues of Ultimates 2 to complete my collection. Of course they didn’t have what the fuck I wanted cuz back issue selection at most comic shops is just pathetic. Shoulda known better. Got ‘em on eBay a few days later with my eBay Bucks so I’m good. I hit up Sbarro’s after and admittedly the italian sausage was on point. Got a combo meal which includes a drink. Motherfuckers didn’t have the Tropicana fruit punch I wanted. Should be a damn sign on that fucking fountain that states that shit cuz that’s the only reason I got the combo. Shoulda changed my order but opted for a Dr. Pepper instead.

Pandorum.
I had just finished my meal in the food court when my date arrived and admission only cost 7 bucks with a student discount and they let me buy both tickets. That’s never happened before. Usually only the student can buy one for themselves. We did Pandorum first and originally had the auditorium all to ourselves but some jit ass teenage girls snuck in about a third of the way into the movie. You know they were talking and screaming and bullshit. First off, you’re fucking kids. Second, you know the shit is rated r and you got no biz in the joint if you know you’re gonna be pussies about the shit…cuz you’re fucking kids! Third, the movie already started so you clearly haven’t perfected the art of theater hopping…CUZ YOU’RE FUCKING KIDS! They eventually shut the fuck up but I was getting really pissed cuz they were fucking talking so much. And then they had the fucking balls to sit right behind us! Good for them that they shut up. And that’s on the real cuz I was ‘bout to blow a fucking gasket in that bitch.

I read all the reviews for both movies. Most of the ones for Surrogates were pretty spot on. Coulda been so much more if the movie was longer but the simple fact that it stars Bruce Willis as a cop means you know exactly how it’s gonna end and that’s exactly how it did end. So I ain’t got much more to say about that. It was entertaining but unsatisfying. And no, I never read the comic. A movie like this don’t help with me wanting to buy it either. Glad I ain’t pay for the movie. I plunked my money down for Pandorum which was actually a damn good movie. The somewhat confusing climax was the only bad part. Everything else was good. People online talking shit about how Ben Foster ain’t much of an actor; I don’t think anyone did a particularly bad job here, including the writer and director who are both practically newbs. And we all know Dennis Quaid can act so by default I expected the acting to be on point and it was.

I’d say this flick is a mix between The Descent (horrible ass movie), Shadow Puppets (low budget but decent, pun not intended) and Titan A.E. You got people waking up in a spaceship with no memory and pale creatures killing people. But there’s so much more to it than that. There’s some layers to the plot but one main mission and the audience journey is good and realistic with some surprises thrown in. There’s also a degree of intelligence involved so you have to use your brain for some parts and that’s not a bad thing at all. There were complaints online about the special effects but I couldn’t find any faults. 2 scenes stuck out. One was where a creature kid killed someone. Really creepy and suspenseful moment due to the creature design. And they’re pretty hard to kill so let’s just say one of them caught a good smackdown that was pretty funny.

There was good characterization for the human cast. If not for the shitty climax, the ending woulda been a damn good one. Speaking of, you could get mislead by it. It makes you wonder, and leaves some questions unanswered and a possibility for a sequel if the movie proves profitable enough to warrant one. A tv series (hopefully not on SyFy) could be a good launching point for it. Pandorum is good. Period. I definitely recommend it and it’s worth paying for. 8 out of 10 stars. It only loses points cuz of that climax. Surrogates, you wanna wait on the dvd. It gets 5 out of 10. Way too damn predictable. Not sure if casting someone other than Bruce Willis would change that. Maybe.

I’m a big Bleach fan so I peeped movies 2 and 3 last weekend. Downloaded a fansub of each. Was standard 1 cd quality but woulda preferred at least 720p. Subs had only a few errors which isn’t necessarily acceptable but still good for a fansub. Movie 1 had all the main characters popping up and using their zanpakuto and bankai and movie 2 wasn’t much different. I did like the merging of zanpakuto and wielder cuz I’ve been thinking all along it could happen. I also think zanpakuto’s could go rogue or exist separate from the wielder. I follow the show on Adult Swim but from rumblings I’ve heard about current episodes, they’re doing a filler storyline based around the zanpakuto’s. If the story is how I think it should be, when the time comes, it should make for some good tv.

If you like Bleach and the first movie, you’ll like the second one. Movie 3 had a Rurouni Kenshin movie style of animation and was a lot slower but you’re gonna watch it anyway. I must say that the Bleach english voice cast is far superior to the original cast. I know some of you ain’t gonna like hearing that shit but it’s true. The english cast has more vocal differences and range while you really can’t tell one character from another with the original cast. Rangiku’s japanese voice sounds like that of an older woman rather than a sexpot. Neither of these movies had much for fanservice which matches the pattern of the InuYasha movies. They don’t resemble the tv series’ all that much due to lack of laughs.

Best scene in movie 2 was when Ikkaku used his bankai. The voice acting when he yelled out its name was so over the top yet stereotypically japanese. The artwork and pose was awesome as fuck though. I tried to find a good wallpaper of that particular moment in the movie but none of them cut the mustard. I’d rate movie 2 as the best of the 3. Movie 1 gets second place. Movie 3 is a distant third. It’s just too slow and too much talking. That’d be good for tv but not a movie.

Eagle Eye.
Peeped Eagle Eye on dvd at a chick’s house. Not a bad movie. Reminded me of Echelon Conspiracy (which came after Eagle Eye but I saw that flick first). AI gone bad; been done a million times. Nothing original here but it’s entertaining. Good enough for dvd; just the way I watched it and the same way you should watch it too. Deleted scenes were few and pointless. My homegirl ain’t like the climax. If you get shot a few times in the body and there’s blood and it’s not explained whether you’re wearing a bullet-proof vest or not, you don’t expect a motherfucker to live do you? After all, Timothy Olyphant’s character died from one goddamn bullet in Die Hard 4.

Shia LeBeouf didn’t do a bad job here. He’s certainly a capable actor but he has to put the jokes on the backburner at some point. It gets old quick since every damn one of his movies gives him such quick wit. I know it comes naturally for him but you need some range there, buddy. Like, Christian Bale range (which I doubt he’ll ever be able to accomplish) cuz practically all of Shia’s characters thus far are the same when you think about it. I give Eagle Eye 6.5 out of 10. Not the best movie on the planet but not the worst either. I’d say Billy Bob Thornton stood out the most with his performance and the chase scene in the package delivery plant was a nice touch, I gotta admit that. Looked like they had a lot of fun filming that one. Makes me wanna hop on a conveyor belt and ride it like a water slide. Easily the best scene in the whole flick and pretty original cuz I can’t say I’ve seen anything like it before. Special effects aside, it’s still only good enough for dvd.

Excluding the Bleach movies, out of all the other ones, Pandorum is the winner, hands down. Go pay for that while you can. It’s worth it. It’s not completely original cuz it borrows from here and there, and I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s scary (it has its moments but those depend on the person) but it is an enjoyable cinematic experience.
